In short

Strength is the card of gentle courage. Upright, it points to patience, compassion and the quiet power to calm big feelings without crushing them. Reversed, it can show self‑doubt, burnout, or emotions running the show. The woman on the card tames a lion with her hands, not a weapon, and she is smiling.

What you see on the Strength card

Look first, read later: this is the Image-First Method from Day 5 of the course. Start with what is actually in the picture.

Figure
A young woman in a plain white gown bends over a large red‑orange lion. A wreath of leaves and flowers sits in her hair.
Action
She cups the lion’s jaws with both hands, closing or opening its mouth with calm, careful pressure. Her eyes are lowered and she has a small smile.
Setting
They stand on a green meadow with a few trees and a lone blue mountain in the distance.
Color
A wide, flat yellow sky fills most of the card, warm and bright, with the lion’s curly mane as the richest patch of color.
Detail
The infinity sign floats above her head, the same symbol as on The Magician. A chain of roses runs from her waist and loops around the lion, linking the two of them.

Strength upright meaning

There is no struggle on this card. The lion is large and could clearly overpower her, yet its head is lowered and its tail is tucked. The woman is not gripping or fighting. She is close, calm and fully present. Strength, in the 1909 deck, looks a lot like kindness.

Upright, the card speaks to inner strength rather than force. The lion can stand for anything wild in you: anger, fear, desire, a craving, a panic that rises out of nowhere. The card does not tell you to kill that energy or lock it up. It shows a relationship with it. You stay present, you breathe, you use a steady hand. Over time, the lion trusts you.

The garland of roses connecting her to the lion is a lovely detail. It suggests that she and the beast are not enemies. They belong to each other. Your strong feelings are part of you, and that is where their power comes from.

If you drew Strength today, think about a situation that calls for patience instead of pushing. A hard conversation, a child having a meltdown, your own restless mind at 2 a.m. Courage here means staying soft when it would be easier to snap. That is harder than it looks, and it is a skill you can practice.

Strength reversed meaning

Reversed, Strength often points to a lion that has gotten loose. Feelings that come out sideways, snapping at people you love, or a habit that seems to have more control than you do.

It can also describe the reverse: a lion so suppressed that you have lost your fire. Self-doubt, feeling small, not trusting yourself to handle hard things. Burnout fits here too, when you have been patient with everyone except yourself. The card invites you to check your reserves. Ask what your inner lion needs right now. Sometimes it needs calming. Sometimes it needs to be let out for a run.

Strength in love and relationships

Upright in love

In love, Strength reflects patience, warmth and emotional maturity. It may describe a partner who stays calm in conflict, or your own ability to stay kind when you feel triggered. It can also point to working through something difficult together without blame. For someone single, it may invite you to lead with confidence that does not need to prove itself. The card asks you to notice how you handle strong emotions in a relationship. Softness, offered with steady boundaries, can be a real source of safety.

Reversed in love

Reversed in love, Strength can point to raw feelings taking over: jealousy, insecurity, explosive arguments, or silence that hides anger. It may also show one person always being the patient one until they are worn out. The card does not decide who is right. It invites you to look at how much energy you spend managing emotions, yours or your partner's, and whether you are also caring for yourself. Gentle strength includes knowing when you need support.

Strength as feelings

As feelings, Strength reflects steady affection, patience and emotional depth. If you pull it while thinking about someone, notice whether you feel calm and safe, or whether you are holding something wild under control. It can show attraction mixed with tenderness, or feelings strong enough to require gentleness. Instead of guessing what is in someone else's heart, ask what your own lion is doing right now: resting, pacing, or ready to roar.

Strength in career and money

In a career spread, Strength favors persuasion over pressure. It may appear when you need to handle a tricky coworker, calm a stressed team, or keep going on a project that tests your patience. It is a good card for teaching, caregiving, coaching kids, working with animals or any role that rewards a steady presence. If you feel pressure to be aggressive to get ahead, the card suggests that calm confidence often earns more trust. With money, it supports patience over impulsive moves.

The shadow side of Strength

Strength's shadow is the belief that your feelings are dangerous. Many people learned early that anger, need or sadness made others uncomfortable, so they muzzled the lion completely. It still lives in them, and it shows up as tension headaches, sudden outbursts, or a quiet numbness. Shadow work with this card asks: which emotion was I taught to hide? What happens in my body when I feel it now? There is another side too. Some people take pride in being the strong one who never needs anything. Their patience is real, but it can become a way to avoid being vulnerable. Notice whether your gentleness is offered to yourself as well, or only to others.

Strength in yes-or-no questions

Many people ask Strength for reassurance in hard times. In this practice, we don't use cards for yes-or-no verdicts. The open question turns the card into a practice of self-compassion, which is what the image shows.

Instead of

“Am I strong enough to get through this?”

Try

“What kind of patience and support would help me through this, and how can I be gentle with myself along the way?”

Strength as advice

Pulled for advice, Strength says: soften your grip. The next time a strong feeling rises, pause for three breaths before you respond. Name what your inner lion wants. Then choose a response that is both honest and kind. Gentle, repeated care is how wild things learn to trust.

Journal prompts for Strength

  1. What is my inner lion right now: a feeling, a craving, a fear? What does it need from me?
  2. When have I been strong in a quiet way that nobody noticed?
  3. Where am I using force when patience might work better?

The most common misreading of Strength

Beginners often read Strength as physical strength or toughness, and expect it to mean pushing harder. In the 1909 deck, the woman's power is compassion and patience. She is not wrestling the lion. Another confusion is numbering. Some older decks place Strength at XI and Justice at VIII. The 1909 deck swapped them, so Strength is VIII here. Both orders exist, and neither changes the card's meaning.
